Digital Portfolio Response- Emily E.

The Tool and How I’ve been Using It:  I used Live binder as the application tool for my Digital Portfolio.  I played around with several ideas of how I wanted use this but determined that for my first one I would use it for myself.  This would help me become familiar with the application and through it’s use determine how I can best use it with my students.

I decided to use it as a book marking tool for myself and the websites that I frequent or come upon by chance.  Live binder is nice because it has a tool in which you can put it in your internet browser toolbar.  So as I come across websites I want to save I can quickly click the link and it will help me save it in an appropriate tab, or topic.  I organized my tabs by different content areas I teach.  This allows me to to search for ideas in my Live binder and explore resources I’ve already determined as appropriate for me.  I also have been coming upon great articles with different iPad apps for educators that I keep losing track of.  I’ve been trying to incorporate the iPad into my teaching more so this has been great for me to keep articles in one area.  I’ve also saved some resources about Digital Citizenship since this is something I’m using more and more in my teaching.  Eventually I think teachers I work with will want to use these too.

Elements of the Rubric:

Platform: I think Live binders was beneficial for me because it was easy to use and easy to save resources to it.  I love that I can access it online and it doesn’t have to just be files or bookmarks saved on an individual computer.  I currently use my laptop, my iphone, my iPad, and an iPad my school has lent me to use so this is easy to use across all my devices.

Content: I’ve been using this Live binder to save resources that help me teach me specific areas such as grade 4 math, phonics, and vocabulary.  I’ve also been saving tools for the iPad and for teaching digital citizenship since I have been, and will continue to be, using this so frequently.  It’s become a handy resource for me to save things I don’t want to lose track of and can look into while planning my teaching.  I also have been finding and saving areas relating to the CCSS.  This will be useful for me when writing lesson plans and linking standards to what we are teaching.  I feel like when you use the standards directly you are much more aware of your focus therefore strengthening your content and teaching.

Reflection:  These resources I’ve saved have already helped me start to bring these great resources and tools I’m finding into the classroom with me.  It also helps me keep the great tools I already use in one place.  Even though I’m in the earlier stages of saving my tools in this format I’m quickly becoming used to it.  It takes some time to build up my resources but I’m excited to have somewhere to store some of the great quality learning I do from others online.  Also, now that I know how to use this tool I think I’m going to create the kind of binder that I was originally hoping I would be able to create.  I’ve wanted to create an online resource that I can give to my students’ parents with links to videos, games, and resources that they can use at home to access some of the content we are teaching.  Before it seemed like such a daunting task to me since I didn’t know how to use these tools, but now I can see how I can manage it as well as share it appropriately.  In my current personal Live binder I’ve already started saving some links as reminders for me as to what I want to include on this page for parents and students.   Overall an enjoyable learning experience.
