Why we need to teach about cyber bullying- Emily E.

Response:

I just recently changed around my reading groups and have the group in place that I want to begin blogging for the project I created for this course. I’ve already started the discussion with them about online use and safety and they quickly began telling me some things I was shocked by, since they are so young.  Cyber bullying is already occurring and these students desperately want to talk about it and want support.

Because of this, for this response I want to focus on online safety for students, online resources to support that, and some general exciting ideas I’ve been finding that are helpful for where I am in this process.  I plan on using these tools to help me understand what and how I should be teaching this.

Online Safety:
-Youtube has a ton of videos that you can sort through, both for educators and parents.

- http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/welcome/start.htm.  LOVE this!  It’s a tutorial of sorts that brings you through how the internet is used.  I WILL be using this with my students!

- http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2011/01/11-resources-for-teaching-learning-web.html  Great list of ways to teach.  (That’s where I got the idea above).

Exciting to me!

Here are some CCSS I found that integrate technology with what we are teaching:

W.4.6. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.

RI.8.7. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or idea.

SL.11-12.2. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data.

SL.11-12.5. Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.

I am using the fourth grade standard in trying to get students to collaborate and publish online.  These are incredibly important because in order for teachers to effectively teach these standards cyber bullying needs to be addressed in our classrooms.  I’ve briefly mentioned before that I’m learning about cyber bullying with my third and fourth grade students which was extremely surprising to me because I initially thought it was a topic I didn’t really need to deal with.

We want our students to be 21st century learners and we can’t help them do that without 21st century skills.  If we are going to be teaching them these skills then we need to teach them the responsibility that comes along with it.

Emily,

Thanks for all the great resources! Although I really personally feel that we need to teach students to handle bullying independently, I think many of the links you shared would be valuable resources in doing just that. Many students merely need a gentle nudge in the right direction.

I never really thought of cyber bullying as being worse than physical bullying, but after many discussions about the permanence of online posts, I guess it makes sense. Words disappear the second they are spoken, but when typed, they have the ability to last forever. Thanks for sharing these great resources!
